Comic Characters Drawn Badly.

July 27, 2011

Every now and again I just like to take an hour or so and just draw whatever I like. It’s kind of a sanity exercise as it quickly reminds me what I love about drawing and painting. There’s something great about getting something on paper that was previously in your head. When I was younger I used to make comics of my favourite characters in their own adventures, the trouble was I’d try to draw them as fast as I could read them so they’d end up a total mess.

Anyways what I’m getting at is I drew some comic characters today just cos.

See when I said…

July 14, 2011

… that I’d be doing more Zelda pictures, I meant it!

This is one of the more memorable scenes from Ocarina of Time when you leave the kokiri forest for the first time and have a touching goodbye with your childhood friend Saria. I know it’s not really close to the game art because I’ve left out the faces etc but I thought it helped make it look slighty more symbolic, almost timeless like a blurry memory.

In other news I’ve just been busy plodding along with commissions and doing bits towards a book in between them.

Also here’s a sloth playing a banjo!

I’ve also put a couple of new things in my etsy store if anyone fancies a look!

Take care!

A Wave of Productivity

May 24, 2011

It’s funny how I seem to go through little patches of productivity. Days go by without having drawn anything with me knowing all too well that I’ve got shit tons of stuff to do but as soon as I get down to it I feel like I could lock myself indoors for weeks on end untill all my projects are complete.

Anyways that’s how I felt today, I got a lot done towards the book I’m illustrating, made a wee T-shirt design and finished a painting.

Let me share. This is a design I made because I love space and all things spacey so I drew this up with the intention of getting it printed onto bags and t-shirts so other fellow space fans can be proud of their space love.

I also did a lot of work for the book I’ve been yammering on about forever but I’ll explain all that stuff in a separate post once it’s done. I also finished a painting today, although it’s hard for me to tell when I’ve finished a painting I always feel that it’s missing something so I usually leave it for a weeks and then come back to it with a fresh head.

This will (If i still like it) be one of the smaller pieces I’ll be exhibiting at the end of the year along with tons more robot paintings.

As always any feedback is more than welcome, and please be sure to check out my shop as I’m always putting up new stuff!

take care!

Just Draw

April 21, 2011

I’ve always been a firm believer in sketchbooks. I think it’s vital for any creative to keep paper and writing implements within arms reach at all times. I myself have got sketchbooks of all shapes and sizes in almost all the rooms in my house as well pocket-sized and bag friendly pads.
But having paper around is one thing, having ideas around is another. And I guess I just haven’t been having any ideas lately. I dunno if it’s because of the mental weight of commissioned work or even the stresses of trying to find work but nothings really been poppin in the noggin.
SO this week I’ve just been saying to myself ‘just draw’ just for the fun of drawing, like back in my school days where I’d plaster my jotters with ninja turtles and monsters along with the odd link or sonic. Mainly because I much prefered dreaming away in my own little world than listening to the teacher.

Right I’ll shut up now, here’s a scan of my sketchbook(click it for a larger view). I’m going to try really hard to get one up once or twice a week.

Take care!

I’m Going on Holiday

March 18, 2011

Yeap! I can’t wait, it’s going to be so nice!

So where am I going? Well! I will explain on this here post-it note.

I’m off to Uist in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland, It’s pretty much the middle of nowhere. I actually can’t wait to be out there with no phones of computery nonsense, I’ll be doing lots of exploring, maybe some landscape drawing and a bit of fishing.

What I’m most excited about though, is bringing my telescope. As I imagine the light pollution over there will be a lot less than here in Glasgow so I’ll get to see a lot more stars n stuff.

Anyways, Have a great week and I’ll be back soon with some tales of travels!

Busy Busy Busy

March 17, 2011

I’ve been quite productive lately!

I’d Just quickly like to let you know some of the wee things I’ve got in the works…

Firstly is something I’ve been planning for a long time now, a little book! It’s about a little ghost, and all the mad stuff you’d get up to if you were a ghost. I’ve been co-writing it with my pal Campbell, as although I like to think I’m good at pictures I’m actually useless with the words side of things.

Here’s a sneaky peak!

Also! I’ve been designing some T-shirts with one of my screen printing pals, do you think this would look cool on a shirt?

Also in the works is an exhibition at the end of the year and an epic zombie comic which should hopefully be done around then, here’s another sneaky peak!
Right that’s all for now pals!

Take care

The Smiling Man.

March 11, 2011

I’m sorry blog.

I’m so sorry. I’ve left you un-updated for over a month and that is inexcusable. But not to worry I’m back now, I had a pretty weird couple of weeks and a lot of things changed but I’m back into a creative routine now so expect regular updates of my usual bits and bobs!

Today’s bit (or bob?) is straight out of my sketchbook at a point where I was trying to get back into a drawing habit.

It’s amazing what little things you can capture from bringing some paper and pens on a bus, I think it’s really nice how sometimes a total stranger can make your day.

see ya soon!
